In one of the largest transport projects in Europe, the safe construction of a strategic rail tunnel in Norway requires in depth knowledge of the rock mechanics along the proposed path of the Tunnel that traverses through interesting mountains and hills. Geovista have supplied a comprehensive state of the art logging system equipped to provide borehole evaluation data for geo-technical analysis along the proposed line. The data is collected as geo-technical boreholes are drilled along the tunnel path to evaluate the rock in preparation for the tunnel construction.
A range of equipment is being used including the standard Dual Focused Resistivity, Side Wall Density, Natural Gamma, Magnetic Susceptibility, Array Sonic and water quality probes to name a few as well as both the Optical and Acoustic Televiewers.
The interesting topology in Norway makes for quite a beautiful and interesting set of data! Geo-Technical data is of paramount importance for such projects as knowing the stability, condition, structural systems, rock characteristics and groundwater conditions help anticipate the behavior of the rock surrounding the tunnel and the type of support required to maintain the tunnel in a stable condition. It also provides the basis for establishing the optimum tunneling method and of course reduces the risk of lengthy and costly delays that may arise due to unforeseen tunneling conditions.
